The Stat Dozen: 2016 Pitching

June 2, 2016 Paul Elliott

Moneyball (2011)

Now that we’re one-third of the way through the season, sample sizes have become larger and data from 2016 carries more weight (Robin Ventura, this means you can take Jimmy Rollins’ .618 OPS and stick it on the bench). Plate appearances for regulars are creeping above 200 and almost every starting pitcher has broken the 50 IP mark.

Statistical sites like Fangraphs, Brooks Baseball, and Baseball Savant are incredible resources for baseball fans. In fact, sometimes I wonder how many hours a day I would spend browsing these sites if I didn’t have a job, wife, and newborn son. As an excuse to spend more time rummaging through baseball data over the weekend, I present to you the first installment of The Stat Dozen, brought to you by Casey's Donuts. Just kidding, but they do have amazing donuts.

Hey Commish, Let's Play Two (More Often)

May 27, 2016 Paul Elliott

Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of attending the White Sox-Indians doubleheader in Chicago. I am such a big fan of twin bills that I came up with a list of reasons why I think Major League Baseball should schedule more of them.

May: Three Up, Three Down

May 19, 2016 Paul Elliott

Three Up

Kyle Lewis

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound junior outfielder from Mercer ranks in the top five in Division 1 baseball in batting average (.419), on base percentage (.547), and slugging percentage (.753). Undrafted and lightly recruited out of high school, Lewis is now considered by many to be the best position player available in the upcoming June amateur draft. Scouting comparisons include Jason Heyward and Adam Jones. The Phillies own the first pick, followed by the Reds and Braves.

If Trump Played Baseball

May 12, 2016 Paul Elliott

Donald Trump

In my short time sending out words into the interwebs, I have written exclusively about baseball. And that makes sense, with this being a baseball website. However, this week I’m breaking from the norm to talk about The Donald. Kind of.

The Worst MLB Draft Class Since We Were Born

May 5, 2016 Paul Elliott

In the midst of 72 straight hours of NFL draft coverage last weekend, an interesting question popped into my head: what is the worst MLB draft class during my lifetime? Has there been a MLB draft class in the last 25 years that has completely flopped? After a few fruitless Google searches, I decided to get my hands dirty and research it myself. Following an afternoon of intense study, I concluded that the worst draft class of the last 25 years was... 2003.
